Not every school volunteer job requires a huge time commitment. In fact, some of the most helpful things parents and caregivers can do for their schools take an hour or less.

Whether you prefer helping at school, from home, behind the scenes, or in quick bursts between work and life, here are simple ways you can make a real impact.

At School

  • Help set up the bookfair (or a one hour shift at the book fair checkout table)
  • Dole out high fives and fist bumps during High Five Friday
  • Door Dudes arrival-line greeter
  • Helping stage funny photos for “stuffie sleepovers”
  • Hang flyers or event signs around the school
  • Decorate the PTO’s bulletin board
  • Help teachers laminate or cut classroom materials
  • Sort fundraiser packets into student folders
  • Set up tables, chairs, and decorations before an event
  • Help clean up after a school event
  • Work the ticket table at the school carnival or dance
  • Pass out popsicles or water during Field Day
  • Set up cones for the fun run

  • Help update the PTO’s website
  • Organize an online sign up or volunteer list
  • Assemble auction or raffle baskets
  • Cut, sort, or prep classroom materials
  • Make copies if materials are sent home with you
  • Write newsletter blurbs or event reminders
  • Coordinate teacher appreciation donations
  • Share PTO/PTA posts on social media

The “Honestly, This Helps A Lot” Category

  • Donate paper goods for an event
  • Pick up ice, coffee, or supplies on your Target run
  • Spend one hour attending a PTO or PTA meeting
  • Help another volunteer for just part of an event
  • Offer a professional skill (photography, graphic design, carpentry, accounting, tech help, etc.)
  • Translate a flyer or message for families
